    The Fridge
1.The fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the l960s when packaged food first appeared with the label:"Store in the refrigerator."
2.In my fridgeless fifties childhood,I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted and we were never troubled by rotten food.Thirty years on,food deliveries have ceased, fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country.
3.The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation.A vast variety of well-tried techniques already existed一natural cooling, drying, smoking, slating, sugaring, bottling…
4.What refrigeration did promote was marketing一marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.
5.Consequently,most of the world's fridges are to be found, not in the tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary.Every winter, millions of fridges hum away continuously, and at vast expanse, busily maintaining an artificially-cooled space inside an artificially一heated house一while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge.
6.The fridge's effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don't believe me,try it yourself. Invest in a food cabinet and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers but at least you'll get ride of that terrible hum.
If you stop using the fridge,at least you won't be troubled by the noise_______.
    A:milk,meat,vegetables,etc.were delivered
B:it has promoted the sales of many kinds of commodities
    C:foods can be preserved
D:most kids like iced soft drinks
    E:every housewife needs food
F: the fridge produced when it is working

    Travel Across Africa
For six hours we shot through the barren(荒芜的)landscape of the Karoo desert in
South Africa. Just rocks and sand and baking sun. Knowing our journey was ending,Daniel and I just wanted to remember all we had seen and done. He used a camera. I used words. I had already finished three notebooks and was into the fourth,a beautiful leather notebook I'd bought in a market in Mozambique.
Southern Africa was full of stories and visions. We were almost drunk on sensations, the roaring(咆哮)of the water at Victoria Falls, the impossible silence of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
And then the other things:dogs in the streets, whole families in Soweto living in one room,a kilometre from clean water.
As we drove towards the setting sun,a quietness fell over us. The road was empty一we hadn't seen another car for hours. And as I drove, something caught my eye, something moving close enough to touch them,to smell their hot breath. I didn't know how long they had been there next to us.
I shouted to Dan:“Look!”But he was in a deep sleep, his camera lying useless by his feet. They raced the car for a few seconds, then disappeared far behind us,a memory of he- roic forms in the red landscape.
When Daniel woke up an hour later I told him what had happened.
    ”Wild horses?”he said.”Why didn't you wake me up,Sophia?”
”I tried. But they were gone after a few seconds.”
”Are you sure you didn't dream it?”
”You were the one who was sleeping!”
”Typical”,he said.”The best photos are the ones we never take.”
We checked into a dusty hotel and slept the sleep of the dead.
While driving Daniel and Sophia saw wild horses.
    A:Right
    B: Wrong
    C: Not mentioned

    Solar Storm
At the end of October 2003,a sudden solar storm hit the earth.Asolar storm refers to
the large amounts of charged particles released into space_________(1)the solar energy
increases. The release of the energy_________(2)place along with the activity of the
sunspots with a cycle of 11 years. This time,the_________(3)of the storm exceeded
    expectations.
This_________(4)of intense solar storm was caused by the eruption of a solar flare
    (闪光)and the ejection(喷发)of the solar corona(日冠)on October28, 2003. Large
amounts of charged particles moved 150, 000,000 kilometers through space toward the
_________(5)in 19 hours. They could affect aircraft roaming(漫游)in space.
The high-energy particles will_________(6)some of the parts of an aircraft. They
may also cause it to fail.High-energy particles can threaten the safety of an aircraft at a
high orbit. If an aircraft orbits at a lower orbit,it is_________(7)because it is under the
protection of the earth's magnetic field.
Asolar storm not only affects aircraft but also is a_________(8)to the environment
and humans. The aerosphere and magnetic field of the earth can_________(9)humans
from ultraviolet radiation and X-rays. While most of the X-rays are absorbed after they enter
    the aerosphere(大气层),still a few can_________(10) the ground.
The geomagnetic storm caused by this round of solar storm reaches its highest level on
the two_________(11)of the earth, which affects electricity supply of North America.
Overexposure to_________(12)threatens the health of passengers on planes flying over
the Polar Regions. If we fly in the sky during such a solar storm,it_________(13)we
receive ten times the X-ray radiation. It's really damaging.
Scientists say a solar eruption is like the sun sneezing, which will make the earth
_________(14)a cold.Though this natural force is irresistible, scientists can still
_________(15)its movement accurately by monitoring.Facing successive solar storms,
    humans can't drop their guard.
    _________(10)
    A:lose
    B:reach
    C:break
    D:prepare

    Earth's Inner Core
Scientists have long struggled to understand what lies at the planet's center.Direct
observation of its center is impossible,so researchers must_________(1)to other evidence.
In 1889,a German scientist detected a severe earthquake in Japan.Geophysicists
concluded that shock waves_________(2) jolts(晃动)from one side of Earth through
the center to the other side. Then in 1936,Danish geophysicist lnge Lehmann studied the
waves' __________ (3) to determine that within Earth's core of molten(熔化了的)iron
lies a solid inner core一but_________(4) that core was made of eluded(难倒)her.
Other geophysicists quickly determined that Lehmann's inner core was composed mostly
    _________(5) iron.Since then,Lehmann's discovery has _________(6)
    conventional Earth science.
But now scientists are challenging traditional theory with new and radical_________
(7).For example,Earth's center could actually contain an"inner core within the inner
core."claim lshii and colleague Adam Dziewonski.
Analyzing hundreds of thousands of earthquake wave _________(8),they
maintain that the inner core has at its heart a tiny, even more solid sphere(球体).This
sphere"may be the oldest fossil_________(9)from the formation of Earth,"says Dziewonski.
Dziewonski and Ishii speculate that shortly _________(10)Earth formed around
4.8 billion years ago,a giant asteroid(小行星)smashed into the young planet and nearly
melted it.But Earth's center didn't quite melt;it_________(11)mass as the planet
cooled. The core within a core may be the kernel(核心)that endured. " Its presence
could change our basic ideas about the_________(12)of the planet,"Dziewonski
    says.
Dziewonski's idea is tame(温和的)compared to the_________( 13 ) theories of
independent geophysicist J. Marvin Herndon.Earth's inner core is made not of iron,he
    claims,but a_________(14)of nickel and silicon.Herndon has a truly revolutionary
notion : Within the nickel silicide(硅化物)inner core is also an "inner" inner core一an
8km-wide ball of the element uranium.Uranium is radioactive.Herndon thinks the uranium
releases heat energy as its atoms_________(15)fission-split and crash into one
another in a chain reaction. In other words,we may live on top of a gigantic, "natural"
    nuclear power plant.
    _________(14)
    A:system
    B:copy
    C:model
    D:compound
